I was a very happy oDesk user up until a couple days ago, when they suddenly decided to suspend my account with absolutely no advance notice or warning. I've employed many talented contractors using this website over the last couple of years, and I was astounded to see them act so unprofessionally. So I tried to chat with one of their customer support people, and after many long waits and disconnects, I finally got someone on there. They told me that I needed to verify my id by sending scans of my passport and bank statements. I say, well no problem, it'll take just a few minutes right? WRONG!
Unfortunately, my id verification was declined shortly after I sent the documents. The problem is that outside the USA, most country passports do not have addresses. Also, bank statements are not in English outside of English speaking countries. Yet, they expect your passport to have an address on it, and your bank statement to be in English! So what to do? It seems nothing can be done. I'm just very very frustrated, losing business, and having to deal with these really incompetent support people have worn my nerves thin.
I hope they sort this horrific verification process, because they're really upsetting and angering their most loyal customers like myself. And without employers, contractors will just move on somewhere else. WAKE UP ODESK!
The most useless, incompetent freelancing site I had the displeasure of trying to register with. For six weeks they kept my account on suspension trying to convince me that my UK passport address and bank statements did not match up in meeting their ID verification requirements and that my British passport was not in English.
I had to point out to them that of course my passport address and bank statement address did not match up, UK passports don't have addresses on them.
Round in a circle we went, for six weeks. The complete incompetence of the customer support team is unbelievable they couldn't run a tap let alone a business.
I do not know where Odesk employs its staff from, or how they have managed to function for so long, the company is utterly useless. I have been in business for 10 years and never have I come across such idiocy. Peopleperhour.com, uk.copify.com are just a couple of examples of much much better sites than Odesk. As the founder of a highly trusted copywriting company I am outraged that Odesk is allowed to trade, I personally will be pursuing every legal avenue to see this company shutdown.
